RHI - Open for Business

Renewable Heat Incentive launches after being postponed in September 2011.

At long last the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is now open for business for non-domestic generators. The original launch was expected to go live on 30th September 2011 but was postponed at only 12 hours’ notice as it was established that the scheme may not wholly comply with EU State Aid rules.  The scheme has since been deemed compatible with said rules and after its passing in parliament and those looking to apply for the incentive can submit their applications from Monday 28th November.

Eligible candidates will be able to access payments on a quarterly basis for heat generated over the next 20 years. The scheme will generate payments from renewable technologies including biomass boilers, solar thermal equipment and heat pumps installer since July 2009.

The launch of the RHI is set to revolutionise the way heat is generated and is the first scheme of its type in the world and will be closely watched by others to see whether it can be successfully replicated elsewhere. The incentive scheme sits next to other government incentives like the solar Feed-in-Tariff and the expected Green Deal which is set to take off in October 2012.

At the launch on Monday Greg Barker, Energy and Climate Change Minister said:

“The RHI will usher in a new era in clean green heat technology.  It’s a world first and has the potential to put the UK at the forefront of a vibrant new green technology sector.

“Renewable heat will be a big win for our economy – it will support thousands of green jobs, reduce our dependency on imported fossil fuels, reduce our carbon emissions and help us meet our renewable target.”

More household savings revealed through Solar Thermal installation

New research by the Energy Savings Trust has revealed for the first time the reductions that householders can achieve through using solar thermal.

The full report, due to be published on 13th October, will say that solar thermal can save households £55 a year compared to average gas prices and £80 a year compared to an electric emersion heater for heating water.

For those on a mission to cut down their carbon emissions, this new technology used for harnessing solar energy for thermal energy can realistically save 230Kg of carbon compared to gas and 510kg compared to electric.

Householders looking to install Solar Thermal technology will be rewarded through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) which is set to revolutionise the way heat is generated and used. This scheme will provide long term financial support to those who install this technology and a grant of £300 which is valid for 3 months will be issued to those who meet certain simple condition involved with the application.

The Scheme which was due to launch for non-domestic generators on 30 September gas has now been delayed as there are some concerns that the large biomass tariff is set too high. The scheme is set to go live before the end of November.

Solar Thermal vs Solar PV for Installers

The rise of Solar Energy in the last few years has been almost meteoric. Solar PV has been all the rage with Feed in tariff’s providing the incentive for many home owners to take the plunge and install solar PV technology on their roof’s. However with most people having fairly limited roof space there is another alternative that is not only cheaper but will also soon be able to generate a return on your investment.

Solar Thermal has actually been around for much longer than Solar PV but it has been eclipsed by its electric generating cousin because that has been the main focus of Feed in Tariff’s. However the introduction of the first phase of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) (which rewards Industrial, commercial, public sector and community buildings for the heat they produce) will produce a surge in demand for Solar Thermal, Heat pumps and biomass boilers.

The second phase of the RHI will be launched in October 2012 and will reward homeowners for the heat they produce. As yet the tariffs have not been finalised however it is very likely that that at the end of next year demand for Solar Thermal is set to rise.

Until the Tariffs are announced it is hard to say which solar solution will be best for you and your home, however I have tried to layout the pro’s and Cons below:

It is hard to say which technology is better as it really depends on your needs. What is clear is that although solar thermal is more energy efficient, the weight of the incentives currently lay with PV and as such this is where financially it makes most sense to invest.

Ideally if you have the roof space installing both would make a lot of sense from both a financial and an environmental perspective. It is also clear that we are currently in a boom time for PV. Many people are still unsure about installing PV, however the current feed in tariff’s are only applicable to installations completed before April 2012. As we approach that time it is likely demand for PV installations will continue to grow as people realise what a good deal is currently on offer.

Very few investments can boast a 10% tax free return for 25 years and deal is not going to hang about.

As an installer Solar PV is likely to be a very wise addition to your skill set, however it is definitely worth looking into being able to fit solar Thermal too. It would be rare to find someone that could fit both PV and Solar Thermal and this could be a winning combination of skills. If you are a qualified plumber it would be worth preparing yourself for the surge in demand that is likely to hit in October next year by training now and getting ahead of the competition. In fact plumbers will be the winners next Octobers as a whole range of technologies will be in increased demand including ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, unvented hot water systems, biomass boilers and solar thermal all gain a boost.
