Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. As a general rule candidates should have knowledge of electrical installation and electrical science. If you have no previous installation experience you may want to attend our City & Guilds 4141 Installation Workshop and 5 day building regs course before taking this 18th Edition course.

The course is primarily aimed at practicing electricians and domestic installers, however it is also very popular with allied professionals such as contracts managers, designers, electrical engineers, consultants, surveyors, and other related trades needing to update and enhance their understanding of the IEE Wiring Regulations. All candidates must be over 16 years old.

Course Content

The courses below cover key aspects of the 18th Edition wiring regulations to enable you to be able to reference your regulations books as you would in real life when faced with a variety of situations. They both include online learning modules coupled with practice exams at the end to prepare you for the real exam which is taken in one of our centres.

  • 18th edition online course

Learning Lounge 18th Edition Full Online Course (20 Hours)

The 18th Edition full course from Learning lounge covers all the key areas required to pass the 18th Edition without a recent 17th edition qualification. The course lasts approximately 20hrs.

Why take a learning lounge course?

Learning Lounge have been producing online courses for years specifically for the electrical sector. The courses are very visual, focus on video content which makes them very easy to digest and follow. The courses are presented by industry experts who are famous within the electrical community such as Tony Cable and Dave Austin. Click the image above for a short teaser video.

  • 18th edition online course

The IET 18th Edition Full Course (20 Hours)

As with the Learning Lounge course this update course covers what you need to know in order to pass your 18th Edition exam if you do not hold a recent 17th Edition qualification.

    Why take The IET course?

The IET are the publishers and authors of the 18th Edition wiring regulations. This means the course content should be spot on, clear and concise. The courses is presented in a less visual way than Learning Lounge and is more suited to those who prefer to learn by reading.

The courses above cover the following:

Scope, object and fundamental principles

Assessment of general characteristics

Protection for safety

Selection and erection of equipment

Inspection and testing

Special installations or locations

Both Learning Lounge and the IET have produced excellent courses which have interactive elements to help you learn and retain the information. Having tested both systems we would suggest that those who learn more visually will benefit from the video driven Learning Lounge experience. If you are more used a more traditional learning style then the IET version will be more suited to your needs. Both courses include online practice exams to get you ready for the real thing!

When you book your course we will send you log in details so that you can access your course within 24 hours but usually much sooner. When you have taken your courses, completed your practice exams and feel ready to take your final exam simply give us a call and we can book your exam in one of our 8 locations across the UK. Please note the prices quoted above include the cost of the online learning and the cost of the exam (inc VAT). You can only take an exam for one of these online courses if you have booked via Trade Skills 4U.

What are the key changes in the 18th Edition?

Key changes to the 18th Edition are as follows:

Protection against overvoltages - Clause 443 is likely to be overhauled.

Protection against fire - Chapter 42 will be updated with extra information on arc fault detection

Electrical Embedded heating - Section 753 will be extended to include embedded electrical heating systems for surface heating, and will include de-icing and frost prevention systems.

Energy efficiency - There will be a brand new section covering energy efficiency

As stated above the course is not designed to cover every regulation in the book. It will teach you how to best reference your book in relation to situations you will face in your working life.

"Many thanks. I scored 100% and I believe Peter (a colleague) scored 98%. Both of us found the (LearningLounge) material of good quality and very useful to be able to dip in and out around work commitments. I was very impressed with Trade Skills 4U. Very professional, excellent facilities and very welcoming – a breath of fresh air for electrical training in my opinion. All in all very impressed, thanks again for the great service from Learning Lounge."

"I thought it (the 18th Edition Full Course) was very clear and delivered in a way that kept interest. The delivery was familiar and so, easy to understand. I liked the extra information that could be accessed, if required, and appeared relevant. The LearningLounge course was designed to make you familiar with the book and did that job very well. I would recommend it.”
