Employer Guide to Electrical Apprenticeships

Build a skilled, motivated workforce with electrical apprenticeships.

Why Choose Apprenticeships for Electrical Training?

Apprenticeships are widely recognised as the gold standard for training electricians. They combine practical, on-the-job experience with structured learning, ensuring apprentices develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed to thrive in the electrical industry.

Available for full-time employees, aged 16 and over, employers in England and Wales can access government funding to support apprenticeships, making it easier than ever to invest in new or existing talent.

What Is an Electrical Apprenticeship?

What Is an Electrical Apprenticeship?

An electrical apprenticeship is a work-based training programme that allows individuals to earn while they learn. Apprentices split their time between working on-site and receiving formal training through a college or training provider, such as City & Guilds Training.

As an employer, you’ll benefit from a motivated team member who is learning the latest industry standards and techniques—while contributing to your business from day one.

How It Works For Employers

Support With Training Costs: Apprenticeship training is fully or partially funded by the government, depending on the size of your business.

Non-levy employers (typically SMEs):
  • Apprentices aged 16–21: 100% funded by the DfE – no employer contribution
  • Apprentices aged 22+: 95% funded, employer contributes 5%
  • Fully funded regardless of age if apprentice has an EHCP or has been in care
Levy-paying employers:
  • Training costs paid from levy account with 10% government top-up
  • Unused levy funds – up to 50% – can be transferred to other businesses
Additional support:
  • £1,000 incentive for employers and providers supporting apprentices aged 16–18 or eligible 19–24s
  • £3,000 bursary for care-experienced apprentices aged 16–24

Tailored Learning

Apprentices gain real-world experience in your workplace, supported by off-the-job training that complements their role.

You will also benefit from a dedicated training officer who will come out to site once every few weeks to support both you and your apprentice, ensuring the learner stays on track throughout their journey.

Future-Proof Your Workforce

Apprenticeships help you build a pipeline of skilled, loyal employees who understand your business from the ground up.
