Progression Options After Completing the Level 3 Diploma

This Level 3 Diploma completes your classroom-based electrical training. To become a fully qualified electrician, you’ll need to find suitable employment and complete your NVQ and AM2 assessment of competence. However, there are several other pathways you might consider:

  • Find employment and begin your NVQ
Once you’re working in the industry, you can start your NVQ portfolio and prepare for the AM2 assessment. These are essential steps to becoming fully qualified.
  • Transfer to a funded apprenticeship
Did you know? You can complete your NVQ and AM2 as part of a funded apprenticeship. Speak with our Apprenticeships Team to explore your options—your Level 3 training will count towards your apprenticeship, reducing the time to qualification.
  • Start working as an electrical labourer or trainee electrician
Use your new skills to work under supervision, as part of an electrical team on-site, gaining valuable experience while carrying out basic electrical tasks.
  • Take a break and return later
If you’re not ready to move into employment straight away, you can pause your training and return to complete your NVQ and AM2 when the time is right.
  • Explore other industries
Some learners use their Level 3 qualification as a stepping stone into related fields such as engineering or building services.

Our Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations marks a major milestone in your journey to becoming a qualified electrician. You’ve now completed all the classroom-based knowledge and practical training required for industry readiness.

Here’s what comes next:

Progress to an NVQ or Accelerated Apprenticeship

To become fully qualified, you’ll need to demonstrate your competence in a real-world setting. You can do this by:

  • Completing a Level 3 NVQ (National Vocational Qualification)
This involves building a portfolio of evidence while working on-site, showing you meet industry standards.
  • Taking the AM2 assessment
The AM2 is a practical exam that tests your ability to carry out electrical tasks safely and correctly.

Once you’ve completed both, you’ll be recognised as a qualified electrician and eligible to apply for an ECS Gold Card, which is widely accepted across the industry.

Accelerated Apprenticeship

If you secure employment after your Level 3 Diploma, you can transfer onto one of our funded electrical apprenticeships. Because you’ve already completed the knowledge units, your apprenticeship will be shorter and more focused—allowing you to concentrate on building your portfolio and preparing for your end-point assessment (AM2S).

Many electricians choose to join a Competent Person Scheme (CPS) as it offers a convenient and cost-effective way to notify Building Control of completed electrical work. While registration with a CPS can bring obvious business benefits—such as increased credibility and streamlined compliance—it’s important to note that joining a CPS is not mandatory.

You can still carry out both notifiable and non-notifiable electrical work without being registered. However, if you do choose to join a CPS, you’ll need to have completed your full training, including:

  • The Level 3 NVQ
  • The AM2 assessment of competence

Only once these are completed will you be eligible to apply for CPS membership.

One of the best ways to build real-world experience is by working with a local electrician or electrical business. This hands-on exposure helps reinforce your training and gives you valuable insight into the day-to-day work of the industry.

If you secure suitable employment at any stage of your training, don’t forget—you can switch to our funded apprenticeship route. Your existing learning will be recognised, meaning you won’t need to repeat any content and your apprenticeship duration will be shorter.

When you have completed your Diploma Level 3 you may choose to:

  • Work with an electrician as a skilled electrical labourer. The skills you have gained will make you useful and able to carry out many tasks under supervision.
  • Gain employment and switch to a funded apprenticeship to complete your portfolio.
  • Gain employment and complete the NVQ and AM2 assessment 0f competence.

On completion of the Level 3 Diploma you may also wish to consider one of our bolt-on courses such as:
