Course timings and delivery methods

The course generally breaks down as follows:

This course is delivered on weekdays and follows a structured format that blends hands-on practical training with guided self-study. Here’s how the programme is typically delivered:

Begin with the basics of domestic electrical installations. You’ll learn how to:

  • Work with twin and earth cable
  • Install lighting circuits, socket outlets, cooker circuits, and bathroom fans
  • Apply earthing and bonding techniques
  • Wire circuits from a domestic consumer unit to simulate a full home installation

You’ll also cover essential technical theory and learn how to safely isolate circuits. By the end of the week, you’ll have built a complete working installation and performed basic dead tests to ensure it’s safe to energise.

Week 2 – Commercial Installation Workshop (5 weekdays)

Build on your practical skills with more complex installations typically found in commercial environments. You’ll be introduced to:

  • Containment systems: metal and PVC conduit, metal trunking, and cable tray

Our Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations provides the essential knowledge and practical skills to kick-start your electrical training.

After completing the Level 2 Diploma, you’ll have several options:

  • Start working as an electrician’s mate
Apply your new skills in a real-world setting by supporting qualified electricians on-site.
  • Continue your training
Progress to the Level 3 Diploma and work towards becoming a fully qualified electrician.

To become fully qualified, you’ll need to complete:

  • A Level 3 NVQ (National Vocational Qualification)
  • The AM2 assessment of competence

Once you’ve achieved these, you’ll be recognised as a qualified electrician and eligible to apply for an ECS Gold Card, which is widely accepted across the industry.

If you secure employment during or after your Level 2 course, you can also transfer onto one of our funded electrical apprenticeships. Your previous learning will be recognised, so you won’t need to repeat any content—this means your apprenticeship will be shorter and more focused.

Many electricians choose to join a Competent Person Scheme (CPS) as it offers a convenient and cost-effective way to notify Building Control of completed electrical work. While registration with a CPS can bring obvious business benefits—such as increased credibility and streamlined compliance—it’s important to note that joining a CPS is not mandatory.

You can still carry out both notifiable and non-notifiable electrical work without being registered. However, if you do choose to join a CPS, you’ll need to have completed your full training, including:

  • The Level 3 NVQ
  • The AM2 assessment of competence

Only once these are completed will you be eligible to apply for CPS membership.

One of the best ways to build real-world experience is by working with a local electrician or electrical business. This hands-on exposure helps reinforce your training and gives you valuable insight into the day-to-day work of the industry.

If you secure suitable employment at any stage of your training, don’t forget—you can switch to our funded apprenticeship route. Your existing learning will be recognised, meaning you won’t need to repeat any content and your apprenticeship duration will be shorter.

After completing the Level 2 Diploma, you can:

  • Progress to the Level 3 Diploma to continue your training toward becoming a qualified electrician.
  • Find employment and work as an electrician’s mate or trainee.
  • Transfer to a funded apprenticeship if you secure a job—your previous learning will count, so your apprenticeship will be shorter.
  • Eventually complete your NVQ and AM2 assessment, which are required to become fully qualified and apply for an ECS Gold Card.
  • Explore related industries, such as electrical engineering or design, using your Level 2 qualification as a foundation.
