If you’re looking for a career that’s hands-on, future-proof, and always in demand, becoming an electrician could be the perfect route for you. Whether you’ve just left school, are considering a career change, or want to take your existing skills to the next level, an electrical apprenticeship is one of the best ways to get there.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about electrical apprenticeships: what they involve, the benefits, who can apply, funding options, and what to expect as you learn. By the end, you’ll have a clear idea if this path suits you.

What is an electrical apprenticeship and how does it work?

An electrical apprenticeship is the industry’s preferred training route for new electricians. It combines paid, hands-on work with structured learning, allowing you to earn while you learn. Unlike traditional courses, you won’t have to pay tuition fees, and you’ll be building real experience from day one.

Key facts about apprenticeships:

  • You must be employed before you enrol.
  • You must be 16 or older to apply
  • There is no upper age limit.
  • Training typically takes 3 to 4 years, depending on the route.
  • You’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to qualify as a professional electrician.

Accelerated Apprenticeships

Learners who have already completed relevant electrical qualifications, such as Level 2 or Level 3 Diplomas, may be eligible for an Accelerated Apprenticeship. This approach uses Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) to acknowledge existing skills and knowledge, ensuring that candidates do not need to repeat previously covered content. For instance, individuals holding both the Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas can transition into an apprenticeship upon employment, focusing solely on the work-based elements and end-point assessment. As a result, the overall duration of the apprenticeship is reduced, enabling quicker progression towards full electrician status.

Benefits of an electrical apprenticeship

Electrical apprenticeships offer a great mix of hands-on experience, steady pay, and industry recognition. Here are some of the main benefits:

  • Earn while you learn: Receive a wage from day one without the burden of student debt.
  • Job Security: Electricians are in high demand, giving you long-term career stability and excellent prospects.
  • Practical skills from the start: Our unique programme helps you quickly gain workplace-ready skills so you can contribute on the job straight away.
  • Focused block-release training: Attend three to five consecutive days of training each month, allowing you to fully concentrate on learning, achieve clear outcomes, and apply new skills back at work.
  • Dedicated support: A Training Officer will provide regular reviews, portfolio guidance, and mentoring throughout your journey
  • Recognition and progression: On completion, you’ll be eligible to apply for the prestigious ECS Gold Card, the industry-recognised standard for fully qualified electricians with a bright future ahead.

Electrical apprenticeship requirements

It’s easy to check if you’re eligible. You need to be 16 or older, and there’s no upper age limit, so anyone can apply. You should already be working in the electrical industry for at least 30 hours a week, with at least half of your hours spent in England. You’ll also need a supervisor or mentor at work, and you must have lived in the UK for at least three years before starting. If you’re not employed yet, our team can help you find an employer.

Electrical apprenticeship funding explained

One of the biggest perks of an apprenticeship is the funding. If you’re between 16 and 22 years old, your training is fully funded. If you’re older, most of the costs are still covered, and employers usually pay the rest, which is about 5%. You won’t have to pay for your training. Plus, you’ll earn at least minimum wage, and many apprentices get even more under JIB rates. With this support, cost shouldn’t stand in your way. Apprenticeships are an affordable and accessible way to start or change your career.

Apprenticeship support and mentoring

From day one, you’re never alone. As an apprentice with City & Guilds Training – Electrical, you’ll receive:
