Our 4 Steps Explained

At Trade Skills 4U we recognise that not every learner will start their journey with suitable employment for an apprenticeship. Our 4 Steps programme has been designed to allow learners to start self-funding their electrical training. Should the learner find employment at any stage during their training, we will ensure a smooth and easy transition to a funded apprenticeship. This transition can take place at any point, even at Step 4 (NVQ Level 3), where the learner will be completing their performance outcomes (portfolio). Once the learner has successfully completed all 4 Steps, including AM2, they will be recognised in industry as a qualified electrician and will be eligible to apply for an ECS Gold Card.

How long does it take to become an electrician?

Generally speaking, an apprenticeship runs over 3-4 years. If you go down the Diploma & NVQ route, the timescales can vary, but most people complete it in 2-3 years.

There are many excellent reasons to become an electrician and join this ever-growing industry. Once you have your core skills and qualifications, there are so many areas to move into. It is an exciting and financially rewarding industry.

To become an electrician you will need a basic understanding of maths and science. We recognise that every learner is different. We will give you all the support you need to feel confident in your learning. Our teachers and Customer Care team are always on hand for extra support if required.

There are many areas you may wish to diversify into once you become an electrician including domestic, commercial and industrial. You may consider working with green technologies such as EV charging, solar PV, battery storage, smart homes, wind or heat pumps. You could also consider Periodic Inspection & Testing, electrical design or HVAC. The possibilities are endless!

You can start self-funding your training on Steps 1-3. You will need suitable employment in the electrical industry to complete your Step 4 NVQ and AM2.

If you find suitable employment at any point, you may wish to transfer to one of our funded apprenticeships to complete your training. For more information visit our apprenticeships page.

The AM2 is not included in the cost of the course. This can be booked separately once you have completed your Step 4 assessments.
