18th Edition Amendment 4 is on its way, providing a pivotal update for electricians and anyone working with BS 7671. The IET and BSI have confirmed that this major update is scheduled for 2026, and it’s going to bring some important changes to keep pace with new technologies and industry standards.

Electricians and associated trades need to understand the changes, expected timelines, and why updating your knowledge is essential.

What Are the Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)?

BS 7671 ensures electrical installations are safe, efficient, and compliant. It covers protection against electric shock, fire, and thermal effects, and provides guidance on wiring systems and equipment selection.
Although BS 7671 is non-statutory, following it helps meet legal obligations under:

  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
  • Building Regulations Part
  • Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002

The HSE confirms that compliance with BS 7671 is “likely to achieve compliance” with these laws.

Scope of BS 7671

BS 7671 applies to:

  • Domestic, commercial, and industrial premises
  • Public spaces and special installations (e.g., medical locations)
  • Low-voltage and extra-low-voltage systems for power, control, and ICT

If you design, install, maintain, or inspect electrical systems—or work in trades like HVAC or renewables—BS 7671 applies to you.

18th Edition Amendment 4 Overview and Release Date

Amendment 4 is expected to be published in 2026 following the Draft for Public Consultation that closed in late 2024. This update will be the most significant since the 18th Edition launched in 2018, addressing new technologies and standards.

What’s New in Amendment 4?

Expected changes include:

  • Functional earthing and bonding for ICT systems
  • Stationary battery installations and energy storage
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) and ELV DC distribution
  • Updates for low voltage generating sets
  • Clarifications for medical locations and firefighter’s switches
  • Enhanced inspection and testing procedures
  • Energy efficiency requirements

What About the 19th Edition?

There is no confirmed release date for the 19th Edition. Based on historical patterns, a new edition typically appears every 8–10 years, so it’s likely several years away, possibly around 2028 or later. The next major update is Amendment 4 in 2026, and industry guidance is to stay current with amendments rather than wait for a new edition.

Do You Need to Update Your Knowledge?

If you hold an 18th Edition qualification, retaking the course isn’t mandatory, but:

  • Staying current ensures compliance and credibility
  • Employers and clients expect up-to-date knowledge
  • CPD is essential for competence

If you don’t yet hold your 18th Edition Qualification, do not wait for 2026. To work in the electrical industry, you need to demonstrate an understanding of the IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). It is therefore crucial that you take an 18th Edition course as soon as you can remain compliant and work safely within industry.

We offer the C&G 2382-22 18th Edition Course both in our training centres nationwide, including our NEW centres, and online via eLearning.

As soon as Amendment 4 is officially released, our 18th Edition courses will be updated with the latest updates. We will also offer an 18th Edition Amendment 4 CPD Refresher Course for those who already hold their 18th edition qualification.

Why Act Now?

The electrical industry is changing fast. From renewable energy systems to smart technology, the skills you need tomorrow are being written into the regulations today. Don’t get left behind future-proof your career with the latest knowledge.
