The core competencies you’ll gain

Practical Skills

You’ll learn practical skills needed to work on domestic electrics. You’ll have your own work space and consumer unit to work on and you’ll build lighting circuits, socket outlet circuits, cooker circuits, shower circuits and more. You’ll learn about earthing and bonding and how to use the tools the right way. You’ll learn installation theory including cable selection and for the assessment you’ll build circuits to demonstrate that you’ve learned what you need to know.

Inspection & Testing Skills

These are essential skills so we teach you the processes, procedures and practical skills to make your work is both functional and safe. The mix of theory and hands-on ensures you’re competent to inspect and test your own work. Note that this doesn’t allow you to carry out periodic inspection and testing – for that you’ll need to add C&G 2391 which you can see here Remember – our experienced advice team make sure you’re choosing the right course for you. Talk to them now for friendly, expert help.

Wiring & Building Regulations

The regulations part starts gently in the first week but you go into much more detail as the course goes on as you might expect. There’s a fair bit of overlap across the topics so we make sure we teach you the right way from the start – avoiding repetition and making sure the key knowledge sinks in. After this your domestic electrical installations will be seen to be compliant with Part P of the Building Regulations as well as the latest wiring regs. Every practicing electrician must have their wiring regs certificate (18th Edition).

Frequently Asked Questions

GET IN TOUCH
Can I split the weeks up?

Yes of course. You cannot book this online but give us a call on 01293 529777 with your preferred dates and we will arrange this for you.

You can pay a deposit a then an interest free instalments over the length of your course.

Our course allows students to carry out domestic electrical work. You can use the skills gained to find work in the industry and the core knowledge gained will allow you to progress on our 4 step programme in the future. In the main students can tackle non-notifiable work and should work with an experienced electrician on more complex installations.

Your acceptance on a Domestic Installers Scheme is the decision of the registration body and dependent on your skills, experience and knowledge level. Tradeskills4U is a training company and responsible for training only. We are not responsible for the assessment process or eligibility of students to gain registration with any external organisation.

If you want to join a scheme please ensure you speak to your chosen scheme provider to check their specific requirements. Recent changes to schemes have made these routes much more confusing and we recommend anyone looking to register should future proof their career by completing Steps 1-4.

Frankly, No. You can undertake notifiable and non notifiable work without being registered with a registration body and whilst there are obvious business benefits to joining such schemes, they are not mandatory.

We have had guidance discussions with Senior building control officials on your behalf and the advice we have been given and as is stated in building regulations, the system is such that you are able to undertake domestic electrical work for a customer and by liaising with local building control you can ensure the homeowner obtains their Part P compliance certificate.

The issue here is ‘competency’. You must be competent to do the work and Building control will need to know you’re competent.

Most people that train with us on this course will build up their experience by doing the following things:

  • Doing small projects at home or with friends and family
  • Carrying out minor works and non notifiable jobs
  • For notifiable jobs they can work with building control to generate a Part P Certificate
  • Working with an experienced electrician for more complex installs (Full time / Short contracts)

When you feel more confident and the demand for notifiable jobs increases you can then look to join a scheme as described above.

  • You will not be able to install in the commercial sector or install 3 phase cable.
  • You will not be able to carry out periodic testing without our 2391-52.

No, Part P only applies to England and Wales.
